01 / 05 — Calculate

(01) Five ideas, one game

01

Calculate

Before any plan, count the forcing moves. Checks, captures, threats — for both sides. Students drill this until it is reflex.

White: Nf3, Bc4 · Black: Ke8, Qd8 — where are the checks?

Plan

A plan is a sentence: "I put my rook on the open file and invade on the seventh." We teach students to say it out loud.

Attack

Attacks are prepared, not hoped for. Bring more pieces than the defender, then strike when the king is short of squares.

Queen and knight converge on f7.

Defend

Good defenders lose fewer games than good attackers win. We practise calm defence: trade the attackers, cover the key squares.

Knight back to f6, bishop blocks on e6.

Win

Technique turns an advantage into a result. Simplify, activate the king, push the passed pawn — and don't relax.

King escorts the passed pawn: e7–e8.
